Character Bootcamp

This intensive workshop is open to writers of fiction and nonfiction–short stories, novels, essays or memoirs—writers who want to improve their skills at creating or describing the most complex, vivid, and compelling characters possible. Through a mix of reading, exercises, and workshop, we’ll build amazing characters!

You’ll learn to ask the questions that help you understand them, employ your characters vividly and meaningfully in scenes and settings, and learn how to express their interior life and changes through exterior description and action. We’ll also pay close attention to dialogue, language, and concrete detail. In other words, you will sharpen all of your creative writing skills through the focus on character. Writers will study published work for examples, as well as provide each other feedback on original scenes.

This workshop is appropriate for writers of all levels. Please expect to read up to 30 pages of material every week and prepare exercises for each class session.
